Is Beer bad for you?

Alcohol consumption is often related to violence, crime, accidents and health problems. Governments around the globe impose taxes on beer consumption hoping not only to increase tax collection but also to discourage alcohol consumption.  Due to its alcoholic content, there is not doubt that excessive beer consumption can cause High blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, liver disease, and digestive problems. Cancer of the breast, mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, and colon.

There is not question that excessive beer consumption could leads to severe health issues, however, researches and health experts agree that moderate beer consumption is not a cause of concern. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, drinking is considered to be in the moderate or low-risk range for women at no more than three drinks in any one day and no more than seven drinks per week. For men, it is no more than four drinks a day and no more than 14 drinks per week[1].

Beer is made from natural ingredients: water, cereals, hops, and yeast. It usually contains alcohol and contains small amounts of B vitamins, minerals, polyphenols and fiber. Years of relevant scientific research from around the world suggests that regular consumption of beer up to two drinks per day for adult men and up to one drink per day for adult women may have a beneficial effect on health. This is associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality, mainly because of a lower risk of cardiovascular[2].

There are hundreds of studies and experiments trying to estimate how much beer consumption becomes and health issues. However, most of these studies compare heavy drinkers and not drinkers, they fail to address the behaviour and health difference from light drinkers and not drinkers.

The study involved nearly 600,000 adults from all over the world who did not have a history of cardiovascular disease. The participants drank between 0 and 350 grams of alcohol each week (to put this figure in perspective, the recommendation for men in the U.S. is equivalent to 196 grams—about six glasses of wine). The study found that drinking 100 grams or less of alcohol per week had the lowest risk for mortality[3].

If you feel like alcohol is causing problems in your job, in your personal life or suffer from other medical conditions like, cirrhosis of the liver, hepatitis C, or chronic pain, as well as some heart conditions and mental disorders, perhaps is time to reduce your beer consumption or not drinking at all.  Nevertheless, if you are healthy, do sports and have a good nutrition, one or two beer will not decrease your life quality.
